IDFR was first established under the Prime Minister’s Department on 1 July 1991 following a Cabinet decision dated 6 March 1991. It was officially launched on 12 August 1991 by then Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Its aims were to provide basic training for future diplomats of Malaysia and several selected  developing countries, as well as to provide follow-up training for those officers already in the diplomatic service. On 27 March 2004, IDFR officially became part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia.

Roundtable on 50 years of Diplomatic Relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands: Lessons Learnt

The Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands jointly organised a Roundtable to commemorate 50 years of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the Netherlands on 21 February 2008.

AFMA-IDFR Pay Tribute to Yang Mulia Tengku Tan Sri Ahmad Rithauddeen

Yang Mulia Tengku Tan Sri Ahmad Rithauddeen was Malaysia’s longest serving Foreign Affairs Minister. He was Foreign Affairs Minister for nine years from 1974 to 1981. After a three-year stint as the Minister of Trade and Industries, he was once again appointed Foreign Affairs Minister from 1984 to 1986. On Monday afternoon, 27 August 2007, he once again set foot into his old domain, the Wisma Putra building in Kuala Lumpur, as the guest-of-honour at the AFMA-IDFR Luncheon Talk Series.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Delivers ASEAN Lecture at IDFR
The Honourable Dato' Seri Syed Hamid Albar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, was at IDFR on Friday, 10 August 2007, to deliver a lecture, in conjunction with ASEAN's 40th Anniversary.

ASEAN Lecture
On the occasion of the 39th ASEAN Anniversary, on 8 August 2006, The Honourable Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi delivered the 2006 ASEAN Lecture, at the invitation of the ASEAN Secretary General.

The IDFR Hospitality Series
In 2005 IDFR started a series of talks called “The IDFR Hospitality Series”. The series, brainchild of IDFR Director General Ambassador Dr Fauziah Mohamad Taib, was held three times in 2005 with the aim of sharing information and experiences gained by working in a mission and to foster good relations and networking among diplomats working in Malaysia.

In continuing with the good practice, three more talks were held in the first half of 2006.
