The Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) functions as the training institute for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia (MoFA), fostering diplomatic excellence since its inception in 1991.
IDFR provides training programmes for Malaysian diplomatic officers, as well as personnel from other government ministries and agencies. In addition to the principal diplomatic training courses, IDFR offers essential, mid-career and senior professional skills development to enhance the professionalism of serving officers; requisite for international postings and continuous professional development, thereby ensuring officers’ preparedness to advance Malaysia's domestic and global engagement.
Beyond training initiatives, IDFR assumes a significant role in global capacity building. The Institute conducts training to participants originating from over 142 nations through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), with a focus on ASEAN and developing countries. It also guides Foreign Diplomatic Officers in Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia’s Culture and Identity (MCI) to bring them up to speed on diplomatic life and workings in Malaysia.
Our Centres
IDFR operates through four specialised centres, each committed to a core pillar of diplomatic training and research.
