Social Media Strategies Course

smsc2025 main

The Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) successfully organised the Social Media Strategies Course from 18 to 20 November 2025 in Kuala Lumpur. The course brought together 21 participants representing various ministries and government agencies, reflecting the increasing importance of strengthening digital communication capacities within the public sector.

This three-day course aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of how to utilise social media more effectively, creatively, and responsibly in carrying out their official duties. As social media continues to shape public perception and become a major tool for communication, the course provided insights on how government officers can leverage these platforms to disseminate accurate information, strengthen public trust, and foster meaningful engagement with diverse audiences.

A key focus of the course was on developing basic photography skills, enabling participants to capture clearer, more impactful images using their mobile phones. These skills were reinforced through practical exercises, where participants learned how angles, lighting, and composition can significantly influence the quality and storytelling value of a photograph. The course also covered guidelines on how to prepare suitable captions, select appropriate visuals, and post content strategically to maximise reach and engagement. In addition, the course emphasised the importance of using social media wisely, especially in maintaining professionalism, safeguarding personal and organisational reputation, and adhering to communication ethics.

Interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities enriched the learning experience, allowing participants to exchange ideas and share challenges related to digital communication in their respective agencies. The positive feedback received reflected the course’s practical approach, relevance, and applicability to their work.

The Social Media Strategies course underscores IDFR’s commitment to supporting the Malaysian public sector in adapting to evolving communication landscapes. By equipping officers with the right knowledge and skills, IDFR continues to promote effective, transparent, and responsible digital engagement in line with the nation’s broader governance and communication objectives.
