On 16 June 2026, the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) launched its latest book, “The Rising Sun: Timor-Leste’s Journey to Peace and Development” at Hilton Kuala Lumpur.
The publication was officially launched by YB Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia and H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste witnessed by Dato’ Zainol Rahim Zainuddin, Director General of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, and Mr Simon Fellows, Acting High Commissioner of the Australian High Commission in Malaysia.
In conjunction with the book launch, H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, delivered a distinguished public lecture on the theme “Navigating Turbulent Times, Pursuing Peace”. During the lecture, the President shared valuable reflections on overcoming geopolitical challenges through courage, empathy, and principled leadership.
The book is the outcome of a trilateral research collaboration between Malaysia, Australia, and Timor-Leste. It documents Timor-Leste’s journey from conflict to peace and development, highlighting the collective efforts of local Timorese leaders, communities, and international partners such as Malaysia and Australia.
This book was authored by IDFR Expert Researcher Dr Murni Wan Mohd Nor and IDFR Research Officer Nurul Farhah Ab Aziz.
