Importance of Knowledge Culture in Leadership: A Civilisational Perspective
On 30 August 2024, the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) held a lecture entitled “Importance of Knowledge Culture in Leadership: A Civilisational Perspective.” The lecture was held to instil the importance of fostering a knowledge culture within our institutions, organizations, and circles of influence, as well as encourage the pursuit of knowledge and the application of wisdom as the core of our leadership practices.
The event was organised by the Centre of Political Studies and Economic Diplomacy (PSED) and was attended by IDFR staff and the Diploma in Diplomacy (DiD) participants. The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr Wan Mohd Nor, holder of the Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas Distinguished Chair of Islamic Thought and was moderated by Mr. Danial Abdul Rahman who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI).
Professor Dr Wan Mohd Nor's lecture started by highlighting that we are all leaders in our respective capacities. He shared that a good leader must start from one’s own self. He emphasised the importance of improving our minds through sincerely seeking knowledge, which would lead to refinement of our character.
He provided a comprehensive overview and referred to historical scholars of different civilizations like Socrates and Plato, as well as leaders such as Qin Shi Huang and Confucious, and many more, drawing lessons from the negative and positive aspects of their experiences.
Professor Dr Wan Mohd Nor emphasized that knowledge driven by self-interest and emotions cannot achieve global harmony, as the overarching interest must always be to achieve justice for all.
The program proceeded well. The questions raised by the participants were critical and led to productive discussions. It is hoped that the program will benefit everyone by developing knowledgeable and visionary leaders in the future.
