The Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) organised the Media Skills Workshop for Mid-Level Officers from 28 to 30 October 2024. Sixteen officers from various ministries and agencies participated, each bringing unique insights and experiences to the interactive sessions.
The workshop set out to achieve three key goals, with focused sessions led by seasoned experts. First, it aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of the media landscape, offering insights into how media influences public opinion and shapes perceptions. Second, it underscored the importance of effective media communication in fostering transparency, building trust, and strengthening the credibility of public institutions. Finally, the workshop equipped participants with practical skills to handle media engagements confidently, including mastering interview techniques, preparing for press conferences and crafting clear, impactful messages. By drawing on the expertise of seasoned professionals, the workshop ensured that every participant could engage with the media confidently and consistently uphold positive messaging aligned with government values.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in a mix of lectures and hands-on exercises, designed to build their media competencies. Interactive lectures covered critical topics such as media relations, public perception management, and the fundamentals of public relations, creating a solid foundation for practical skills application. Role-playing exercises and simulated media scenarios further allowed participants to apply these concepts in real time, gaining feedback from trainers and peers on effectively managing various media encounters.
The closing remarks were delivered by Ms Norlela Samad, Principal Assistant Director of the Centre for Leadership, Negotiation, and Public Diplomacy (LNPD). She expressed her appreciation for the participants’ active involvement and commitment throughout the workshop. Ms Norlela emphasised the long-term value of the skills and knowledge gained, expressing her hope that these tools will serve the officers well in their daily roles and contribute to professional, transparent, and impactful media interactions on behalf of their ministries and agencies.
In conclusion, the Media Skills Workshop for Mid-Level Officers was a resounding success, reinforcing the importance of media literacy and equipping government officers with essential tools for professional media engagement. By participating in this programme, officers now stand better prepared to navigate media interactions effectively, ensuring clear, consistent communication that reflects the integrity and transparency of Malaysia’s public service.
