The Centre for Political Studies and Economic Diplomacy (PSED) at the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) has successfully conducted the Strategic Writing Workshop from 28 to 30 October 2024. The workshop was held at the Swiss Garden Hotel, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, with participants consisting of officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT), and IDFR for intensive training in crafting impactful, analytical, and persuasive writing.
The primary objective of this workshop is to enhance participants’ skills in information retrieval and analysis, an important step in generating critical essays supported by credible sources and sound research. By exploring suitable techniques in essay writing, participants are exposed to methods for presenting their research findings in a clear, persuasive manner that aligns with diplomatic objectives in addressing contemporary global challenges.
The three-day workshop included insightful sessions led by distinguished speakers. Mr. Wan Mohd Aimran Wan Mohd Kamil, Senior Fellow at Akademi Jawi Malaysia, opened with a session on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research and Writing, providing participants with an understanding of AI’s role in modern research. Following this, Dr. Murni Wan Mohd Nor, Expert Researcher at IDFR, led two sessions on Writing a Critical Essay. These sessions focused on techniques for producing well-researched, cohesive, and high-quality essays on current issues, an essential skill for diplomatic officers.
Another highlight was the session by Mr. Danial Abdul Rahman, CEO of Asian Strategy and Leadership Incorporated (ASLI), on Persuasive Narratives & Effective Communication Skills, which provided participants with tools to communicate complex ideas compellingly. The final day featured Mr. Mohd Firdaus Mohamed Khairi, Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Digital, who shared insights on Using AI in Research and Writing, equipping participants with techniques to leverage AI in their professional work.
Participants engaged in group discussions and collaborative exercises in this workshop, ultimately presenting their work on the last day. The workshop concluded with closing remarks delivered by Dato Westmoreland Edward Palon, Director of the Competency Enhancement Centre (CEC), IDFR.
