International Diplomacy: Communication and Culture (CIDCC)

Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) in collaboration with the Public Health Development Division, Ministry of Health (MoH) has held an inaugural course on International Diplomacy: Communication and Culture from 2 to 3 August 2023. The course was attended by 40 participants from MoH who are under the ASEAN Health Cluster Focal Points.
Taking in the importance of having cross-cultural understanding and awareness in dealing with ASEAN affairs, the modules for the course were designed to enhance the knowledge and skills related to international diplomatic practices, intercultural communication, and cultural diversity. The participants were also exposed to sessions that made up of knowledge sharing on Cultural Diplomacy in the ASEAN Arena, Cross-cultural and Intercultural Communication, the Effects of Culture on Bilateral and Multilateral Relations, Language and Diplomacy, Cultural Intelligence, and Developing Cultural Competence and Diplomacy based on MADANI Related Values. The course also touched on Official Correspondence in which the participants were exposed to techniques and skills in drafting interventions, concept notes, and report writing.
Through engaging lectures, sharing sessions and interactive activities, the participants gained a comprehensive understanding that extended beyond cultural competency. They also became more conscious of their ‘identity’ that one should possess as a Malaysian and recognised the importance of adhering to diplomatic procedures while prioritising national interest.
