Commonwealth Regional Programme On Diplomatic Training 2011

Today saw the Closing Ceremony and Certificate Presentation for 20 participants of the Commonwealth Regional Programme on Diplomatic which began on 10 October 2011. 20 mid-career diplomats from Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Malaysia spent two weeks in Malaysia in the training programme funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Accompanying the participants were two representatives from the Secretariat.

Throughout the two-week duration, the participants were exposed to aspects and issues related to diplomacy, international relations, regional developments, cross-cultural awareness and security matters. These were presented though series of classroom interactive lectures and discussions and field visits. The participants also had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of real Malaysian hospitality and tradition when they were taken to a Homestay Programme in Malacca during the weekend.

Among the highlights of the training course was a dinner hosted by IDFR’s Director General, YBhg. Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari. The dinner was a rare mark on the canvas of IDFR as it combined three training courses involving international participants. Two other training programmes were the Diplomatic Training Course 2/2011 and Strategic Analysis 2011 under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme. Together that night were 56 diplomats from 22 countries. This, indeed, gave an excellent opportunity for the participants to network and establish connection.

Though two weeks were not long enough to master the details in diplomacy, the duration did create a stage for diplomacy to be enhanced and practiced, for the participants of the Commonwealth Regional Programme on Diplomatic Training went through intensive schedule from the first day the training programme started.
